Jami and I knew the state senate was voting on legalization of marriage equality late Friday night and had been flipping to coverage on and off to see updates, without actually getting any real updates (Senator Diaz, however did you get elected? Way to serve your people). Tired, we had moved on to other pursuits when we heard screaming and yelling and bells ringing out on my street. Yes, bells. At first we muted the tv and were like wtf is going on out there?! and THEN we realized! And it felt amazing.

(and reminded me very much of the 2008 election, where I was reading in my bed (I had no tv for a few months, a very sad time) periodically checking my computer for updates when suddenly I heard a BLAST of screaming and cheering and whistles and and noisemakers on the street and realized that Obama must have won)

I saw these ever so lovely folks last week when they opened for Adele, thanks to Jami. Not only because the tickets were a Valentine's Day present (awww mush), but also because she insisted we get to the Beacon early (full disclosure: my "early" is often her "on time"). I said, eh it's just down the road, do we care about the opening act? We don't even know who they are! Let's just waaaait. But she won and I'm so glad that we did get there early (with enough time to purchase $12 drinks! thanks Beacon!), because The Civil Wars are amazing. A rare occasion where the audience actually really enjoys the opener, not just politely clapping and cheering their way through the set till they get to who they actually came to see. Totally worth checking them out, and here is one of my favorite numbers that they did (obvs this is not from last Thursday. and I don't know why the video is wonky? but anyways)

Captain Von Trapp and I are very sorry to inform you that we no longer plan to wed. We offer our deepest apologies to those of you who have already made plans to travel to Salzburg this summer.

Those of you on the Captain's side of the guest list are probably aware of the reason for the change of plans. I'm sure you have already received that charming "Save the date!" card in the shape of a mountain goat from the Captain and his new fiancée, Maria.

I must confess to being rather blindsided by the end of our relationship. It seems Captain Von Trapp and I misunderstood each other. I assumed he was looking for a wife of taste and sophistication, who was a dead ringer for Tippi Hedren; instead he wanted to marry a curtain-wearing religious fanatic who shouts every word she says.

But I don't want you to be angry at him. We are all adults here. "But Baroness," so many of my friends have said, "you must be devastated. You yourself are fabulously wealthy, so you cannot have wanted the Captain for his money—you must have truly loved him." It's true. But so, I am sure, does his new fiancée, his children's nanny. Her wardrobe is made of curtains. She's definitely not a gold digger or anything.

I'm sorry. That was crude of me. She seems like a lovely person, and she and the children have a great deal in common.

A great, great, great deal.

Since I will no longer be a part of their lives, I do hope you will all keep an eye on the Captain's children. I am not terribly maternal but I was very fond of them in my own way and I must admit I am worried what will become of them now that I have gone. I had planned to send them to boarding school, since their education at the moment seems to consist mostly of marching around Salzburg singing scales. I think it would have been particularly helpful for the eldest daughter, who seems intent on losing her virginity to the mailman.

Please, friends, don't worry about me. While I was a bit startled to be thrown aside for someone who flunked out of nun school, I assure you that I will be fine, and my main pursuits in life shall continue to be martinis, bon mots, and looking fabulous. You'll also be glad to know I have retained custody of the Captain's hard-drinking gay friend, Max. Anyone who gets tired of sing-a-longs should feel free to look us up.

Again, my deepest apologies for this disruption to your plans. I am currently sorting through the wedding gifts we've already received and I will send them back as soon as possible. The Captain would help, but he is busy learning to play a song about cuckoo clocks on his guitar.

It's really good having connections/a girlfriend who has connections in the "business." Like that time on Tuesday night when we ended up being gifted tickets to the invited dress rehearsal for Sister Act on Broadway.
This is the second invited dress (the night before the first Broadway preview, the first time the cast does the show in front of an audience) I've been to and there's an incredible energy and also the best people watching because you can spot all the who's who of the theatre world. Alan Menken, I see you shmoozing a few rows ahead of me. Whoopi, girl I see you too.

Anyways, it was, amazing. Like, phenomenal. I was kinda nervous because I knew it was an all original score and therefore none of the favorites from the movie(s) would be there, but I was still super excited because, duh. And I can't get the music out of my head. And Jami and I were both blown away by how fantastic and hilarious and moving (tears were shed? I won't say) it was. Basically it's incredible and you need to see it and I totally plan on paying actual money to see it when it opens for reals in a few weeks.

So I'm holed up in Jami's apartment in Williamsburg, struggling to achieve basic feats like breathe, swallow and generally not feel like I want to die. I'm forcing tea and medicines down my swollen throat and watching the Today show (it's really insane what a huge chunk of the news this Charlie Sheen madness is taking up) and even her roommate's cat Bien is sneezing next to me. We're miserable. Due to some boredom thanks to aforementioned Sheen-mania, I grabbed her computer to get on the internets. One of the tabs she had open was this thing, a fairly awesome online zine (ps I'm sorry but zine? I didn't realize this was 1999. but anyways) from the Harding University Queer Press.

Initially I was just intrigued because the title, The State of the Gay, made me giggle but thennn I started clicking through and, wow. The posts and stories inside are funny (some sad), thought-provoking and ultimately really touching. So even if you're not snuggled up on a couch, willing yourself to stay alive, do yourself a favor and read it. At least some of it. I think this one is my favorite (slash I kind of feel like I wrote it somehow, particularly the part about liking dresses and pink and Austen):

adventures in cooking 101

During a transatlantic phone call yesterday afternoon with my favorite Parisian expatriate, we somehow meandered into a conversation about American gluttony at its finest- the growing food within a food (within a food) trend. Fascinating items included but not limited to, the now world famous turducken
these adorable pumpkin pie cupcakes
the 1800 calorie per slice pumple cake (a mix of apple and pumpkin pies mixed into vanilla and chocolate cake)

and my personal favorite, the turkey cake.(that would be layers of turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce covered on the outside by mashed potatoes and topped with sweet potatoes and marshmallows)

Inspired by the above food decadence, my friend/former roommate Nicole's food blog and the crisp autumnal breeze outside, I decided tonight would be a grand night of cooking for me: my fav vegetarian chili and pumpkin cream cheese cookies.

The chopping, spicing, simmering, baking went off without a hitch and I was very pleased with my creations (well the cookies are still finishing their baking but 1. the dough was delish 2. so far they look good and 3. how can you go wrong with pumpkin and cream cheese? you can't). But I didn't get to take pictures of my products as instructed (sorry Bry), because I was then distracted by a minor catastrophe... in the form of a HUGE sounding explosion and a shattered glass lid on my stove top.
Before you go judging/scolding me... I did get an A in my honors physics class in high school and I am no kitchen virgin, so I understand why you shouldn't trap air between glass and a hot surface. However, the counter space in my little kitchen is extremely limited and I assumed it would be fine to just set it there for a few minutes while I shuffled some pots and pans and bowls around to make more room. I was wrong. And severely underestimated how unbelievably scorching hot my state of the art (cough) stove top/oven gets.

Seconds after snapping the above picture, I became fearful that the lid would somehow explode again (which it did) and/or shatter everywhere as I tried to clean it up (which it did), so I ran away and scrounged up some impromptu protective wear- sunglasses, rainboots, hoodie (with hood up), oven mitts, spatula. Therefore when my stove top and kitchen floor were soon completely covered in glass, I was ready. It's amazing how much mess that little exploding lid made, because glass was everywhere- except in my exposed pot of chili (I think).

So approx 24 hours after purchasing on Wednesday, I finished Portia de Rossi's book Unbearable Lightness.
And it was really, really good.

Being that I am a human with a soul and a sense of humor, I love Ellen DeGeneres. Like many, I dvr her show daily and additionally am a huge Ellen-Portia stan (thanks for the lingo, ontd). I had a huge secret crush on Nell Porter back in the day and Lindsay Bluth is one of my favorite TV characters, ever. Therefore, I was already aware of this book's impending release and planned on buying and reading it even without knowing too much about its content. After finding out and consequently watching Portia's appearance on Oprah, which made me cry, it was a done deal.

The book is a memoir that details her struggle with the pressures of fame and working in the industry, specifically how it manifested in her severe eating disorder and closeted sexuality. It gets dark and it gets graphic, but its entirely honest and very moving. I think the most striking thing is how universal her story feels to anyone who has ever struggled with feeling different or ostracized or sick — even if you’re not gay or you’ve never had an eating disorder or suffered from severe self-worth issues. But if you ARE someone who can relate to any of the above, or all three (ahem), her words just resonate that much more.

In short, you should buy it. And read it. And for more heartwrenching adorableness, watch what happened when she was on her wife's show Thursday.

This past week brought a handful of gloriously fun events, that we managed to drag ourselves out to despite the record heat wave (103 degrees. in New York City. I spent 19 summers in Houston and I am still telling you, it was absolutely miiiiserable here). And I highly encourage you to do the same if possible:

- Gaga at Madison Square Garden. What can you even say besides... ooh la la (my kids and I also gathered around the tv at work Friday morning to watch her on the Today show. Appropriate? Completely. You haven't heard "Alejandro" until a four year old in a wheelchair performs it for you).

- Grease was re-released in singalong form and Joanna and I snuck in whiskey lemonade. Many good life choices were made that night.

-Gotham Girls Roller Derby = SO MUCH FUN. You seriously have to go because it is such an experience. And Suzy Hotrod is the most badass person I have ever seen in my entire life. I am simultaneously terrified and in awe of her.

I realize that this song is almost two years old at this point buuut I heard it on the radio again today and oh how I love it. It's such a cutesy sounding summery song, that's secretly (or not so secretly?) heartbreaking. Plus I have a special relationship with Matt Nathanson* and his music conjures up about 349857 memories, good bad and ugly, from my lovesick emotional high school days.

While I was on a great quest to find a voltage converter/adapter suitable for Spain and Morocco, the following mash-up shuffled onto my pod and giiiiiirl, I forgot how much I love it. Those little pink ear buds were definitely blowing up in my ears while I traipsed around the UWS this afternoon. When mash-ups are done well and not just a lame cacophonous (SAT prep class 2002, holllla!) mix of songs, they're amazing. Particularly when two of my favorite genres, shameful pop and hiphop, are mixed. Which perhaps explains why I love the following so much, aside from the fact that I will always shamelessly love anything related to "Party in the USA":

I understand that the Hollywood powers that be enjoy making ridiculously unnecessary and awful remakes. However, I recently learned that they are working on a remake of the cinematic classic Mannequin and (insert Carrie Bradshaw voiceover) I can't help but wonder... When will it ever end?! As I said, is nothing sacred?! And what will they decide to remake next? Casablanca? Titanic? Citizen Kane? Star Wars? Leave the classics alone!

Many people can attest to my love for this fine, fine piece of film- including my mother, who had to endure (slash clearly thoroughly enjoyed) my repeat viewings as a child. If this actually comes to fruition, I don' know what I will do. For now, I shall say a fervent prayer and replay this over and over.
